He previously was CIO for EarthLink, where he was responsible for leading the company’s internal and customer-facing technology platforms. John D. Lanza, EE 87, MS EE 88, has been named chair of the intellectual property group of the law firm Choate, Hall & Stewart LLP. Lanza is listed in Chambers USA as a leading attorney in the field of intellectual property. He received his juris doctor degree from Northeastern University School of Law in 1995. Liliana Maldonado, MS SanE 80, received a distinguished alumna award from the University of Puerto Rico in October. An environmental engineer, Maldonado lives in Herndon, Va. John C. Moosbrugger, MS ME 85, PhD ME 88, professor of mechanical and aeronautical engineering at Clarkson University, has been appointed associate dean for academic programs of its Wallace H. Coulter School of Engineering. Moosbrugger joined the university’s faculty in 1989. He served as department chair from 2001 to 2005 and has served as associate director of the university’s honors program since 2007. Stephen Musolino, PhD NE 89, a certified health physicist at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Brookhaven National Laboratory, has been elected a fellow of the Health Physics Society. He has been active in the society for more than 20 years and is a past president and current treasurer of its Greater New York chapter. He has participated in the National Nuclear Security Administration’s Global Threat Reduction Initiative. After the 2001 attack on the World Trade Center, he was part of the Radiological Assistance Program team that was deployed to monitor the debris for radiation. Don Owen, EE 88, has been named vice president of operational excellence and product development for Mannington Mills Inc. He and his wife, Kim, live in Astronaut Sandra Magnus Slated for Fall Mission stronaut Sandra H. Magnus is scheduled to fly to the space station this fall. Magnus, PhD CerE 96, will serve as a flight engineer and NASA science officer for part of Expedition 17 and part of Expedition 18 transporting International Space Station expedition crews. She made her first space shuttle flight in October 2002 on a space station assembly mission, logging in 10 days, 19 hours and 58 minutes. Sandra H. Magnus Magnus operated the space station’s robotic arm during three spacewalks required to outfit and activate a component to the station. In July 2005, Magnus was assigned to the ISS Expedition Corps to begin training for a long duration mission aboard the station. Magnus was selected by NASA in April 1996 and completed two years of training. She is one of 15 Georgia Tech alumni who have served as astronauts. Steve Padgette, Chem 80, PhD Chem 84, received an MBA from Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management in June. Padgette, who is vice president of biotechnology for Monsanto Co., was named a distinguished science fellow at Monsanto in 2007. He also was named to the Biological and Environmental Research Advisory Committee of the U.S. Department of Energy. Jim Pericles, IE 82, of Bel Air, Md., accepted a position testing and evaluating air drop systems for the Army after spending a year in Iraq with the Army Reserve. Steve F. Pierce, MS IE 86, has received a PhD in industrial engineering from the University of Alabama in Huntsville. Pierce is chief of studies and analysis for the Army Space and Missile Defense Command. Cy Smith, IE 85, received the Innovation Award at the annual Atlanta Telecom Professional of the Year awards gala in November. Smith is the CEO and founder of AirSage, an Atlanta-based company with technology providing real-time traffic information. Prior to the launch of the company in 2000, Smith was president and CEO of Advance Technology Corp. Robert N. Stargel Jr., EE 83, was a recipient of the 2007 Society of Women Engineers’ Rodney D. Chipp Memorial Award in October. The vice president of global nonwovens for KimberlyClark Corp. in Roswell, Ga., Stargel was recognized for supporting and advancing women into both technical and managerial leadership positions and mentoring the corporation’s next generation of engineering leaders. Stargel serves on the advisory board for the Women in Engineering program at Georgia Tech. Beth St. John, ME 84, is a quality systems manager with Piper Aircraft and has moved to Vero Beach, Fla. Dave Williams, Mgt 89, won the mayoral election for Suwanee, Ga., in November and took office Jan. 1. The owner and CEO of Southtrac, Williams served on Suwanee’s City Council from 1998 to 2001, during which time citizens voted to approve an $18 million bond issue for green space. Suwanee has since acquired 400-plus acres of parks/open space and built several miles of trails. In 2007, Money magazine ranked Suwanee No. 10 on its list of the best places to live in the United States. Demetrios A. Zaferes, Arch 80, of Long Beach, Calif., has been promoted to senior architect for the Port of Los Angeles. Jarrell D. “Jay” Andrews Jr., Mgt 97, and his wife, Mary, announce the birth of a son, Emmett Charles, on Nov. 28. Emmett joins sister Harper Elizabeth, 3, at the family’s home in Sugar Hill, Ga. Andrews is national accounts sales manager with Con-Tech Lighting. Matthew G. Browher, IE 96, is an account director with AvenueA/Razorfish in Atlanta. He and his wife, Melissa, live in Acworth, Ga., with their daughter, Lily Anderson, 1. Clay Andrew Couey, ME 98, EE 99, MS ECE 99, and Meredith Mitchell Couey, Mgt 01, announce the birth of a son, Andrew Bradford, on July 16. Andrew joins brother Clayton, 2, at the family’s home in Clarksburg, Md. Meredith is a full-time mother and Clay is senior manager of the radio frequency engineering department at Digital Receiver Technology. Mario Diotto, IE 99, and his wife, Gisele, announce the birth of a daughter, Catterina Fiore, on Feb. 28, 2007. Diotto is a global commodity manager in the general procurement department at Dell Inc. The family lives in Pflugerville, Texas. Holly Doyal, ME 90, and her husband, Jay, announce the birth of a son, Patrick Hamilton Doyal, on July 8. Patrick joins brothers Michael, 5, and Connor, 8, at the family’s home in Birmingham, Ala. Doyal is the manager of the generation planning function for Southern Company. Tracy Ledford Ellet, TE 95, and Steve Ellet, IE 94, announce the birth of a son, Nicholas Charles, on July 23. Nicholas joins sister Julia, 3, at the family’s home in Dunwoody, Ga.
