Smith Jr. Outstanding Young Alumnus Troy Rice & Highest Accolade Bestowed for Lifetime of Leadership T Honorary Alumnae Jeanne Ferst Joanne LeCraw Dorothy Poole Marilyn Somers Carolyn Stewart he Alumni Association presented its highest honor, the Joseph M. Pettit Alumni Distinguished Service Award, during the Gold & White Honors ceremony and celebratory dinner Feb. 7. Named for the late Georgia Tech president, the award recognizes a lifetime of leadership, achievement and service to the Institute and the community. Pettit, it was said, “never compromised on principle or on his vision of excellence (and he) had the respect and loyalty of everyone who worked with him and the love and friendship of many.” The Alumni Association renamed the award in Pettit’s honor after his death from cancer in 1986. The first Alumni Distinguished Service Award was presented in 1934 to L.W. “Chip” Robert Jr. The list of recipients also includes Bobby Jones, Fuller Calloway, George Griffin, Ivan Allen Jr., Jimmy Carter, Robert Ferst, Polly Poole, Julian LeCraw and Milt Stewart. GARY T. JONES Gary Jones, IM 71, a retired investment banker, has given liberally of his time, energy and financial resources to support the Georgia Tech community, and he has inspired countless others to follow his lead. After graduating from Georgia Tech, Jones earned an MBA from The Darden School at the University of Virginia. In 1974, he joined the investment banking firm Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette in sales and trading. In 1978, he moved to L.F. Rothschild, and during his 10 years there, he became the youngest partner in charge of high-grade corporate bond trading and sales. In 1988, he returned to Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette as the global sales manager for the fixed income division. Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette eventually merged with Credit Suisse First Boston, an arm of Credit Suisse Group. Now retired from the investment banking world, Jones has launched a new career as a proContinued on Page 10 A.J. LAND JR. Aaron Jenkins Land Jr., IM 60, chairman of Pope & Land Enterprises, has long been at the forefront of development in Atlanta and at Georgia Tech. Land was president of the Georgia Tech Foundation when the ribbon was cut to ceremoniously open Technology Square, the Institute’s expansion across the Downtown Connector. He built Pope & Land Enterprises, the firm he founded in 1979, into one of Atlanta’s leading office development companies with more than $700 million in assets. His service to Tech began as a student. Land was the senior class president as well as a member of the Anak Society, Omicron Delta Kappa, Koseme, Tau Beta Pi, Sigma Chi and the Ramblin’ Wreck Club. An Army veteran, Land also earned a law degree at Emory University. His service record as a Tech alumnus is even longer. Land was an Alumni Association trustee and chaired the Class of 1960 40th reunion and the 41st Continued on Page 11 EDWARD ROE STAMPS IV Edward Roe Stamps IV, IE 67, MS IE 72, founding managing partner of Summit Partners, is a champion of Georgia Tech and its students. He is vice chairman of the Campaign Georgia Tech Steering Committee and has supported students at the Institute through funding such facilities as Stamps Field, the Penny and Roe Stamps Student Center Commons and the Dr. Edward Roe Stamps III Health Services named for his father, who served as a doctor at the former Georgia Tech Infirmary. He also has established the Stamps Leadership Scholars Awards offered to the top 15 entering freshmen each year and has been a supporter of the President’s Scholarship Program for several years. “These are incredibly talented kids,” he said. “Many of them will have an important impact on the world we will be living in. I enjoy the opportunity to give them a little boost at this stage in their lives.” The Stamps Family Continued on Page 10 MICHAEL TENNENBAUM Michael Tennenbaum, IE 58, senior managing partner of Tennenbaum Capital Partners, was incredibly involved as a Georgia Tech co-op student. A sampling of his student memberships include the Alpha Epsilon Pi fraternity, Physics Club, Yellow Jacket Club, Scabbard and Blade, Triangle Club, World Student Fund Committee and St. Patrick’s Council. He performed in DramaTech, served on the staffs of the Rambler, Technique and Engineer publications and was a resident assistant and a cheerleader. As an alumnus, Tennenbaum hasn’t slowed down. After earning an MBA from Harvard and pursuing a successful career on Wall Street, he followed an entrepreneurial impulse and founded his own private investment firm, Tennenbaum Capital Partners. He continues to be one of Georgia Tech’s most enthusiastic cheerleaders and remains actively involved in the affairs of the Institute, serving as a vice chairman on the Campaign Georgia Continued on Page 11 TECHTOPICS | SPRING 2008 9
