That means alumni across the country can play a huge role in recruiting as an extension of the admissions office, said director Rick Clark. “They are the face in their own community, and this year it’s more relevant,” he said. “Even though the trend in admissions is to enhance Web presence, still there’s a lot to be said for the physical, tangible approach.” The main way alumni can aid with recruiting is by hosting or participating in receptions for admitted students in their area, Clark said. Those events — held mostly during March and April — come as top high school seniors decide among their preferred schools. “Those are very effective,” Clark said. “Not only do they keep the alumni connected, but parents of the potential students can see there’s a successful, local person who graduated from Tech.” Alumni who know a qualified student in grades 8-12 they believe would make an excellent addition to Tech may now directly refer the student through the Alumni Association’s Web site. By filling out an online form with the student’s information, alumni can have the student entered in Tech’s Office of Undergraduate Admissions’ database. “This is something very simple that alumni across the country can participate in, and it could have a big impact on Tech and the student’s life,” said Mora Hostetter, manager of Student Recruiting and Scholarships. The Alumni Association recently launched the Certified Student Recruiter Program. Alumni who are interested in recruiting students at college fairs and receptions can receive training to help them in the effort. The training consists of reviewing a 15minute video and handbook and then taking a quiz. Interested alumni may access the training at gtalumni.org/pages/studentrecruiting. Student referral also is available at that site. Certified recruiters will get information about college fairs, receptions and other potential recruiting events in their areas. Alumni interested in hosting a reception with their local Georgia Tech club or participating in other recruiting programs may contact Hostetter at (404) 894-0749 or mora.hostetter@alumni.gatech.edu. To find club events across the country, alumni can visit gtalumni.org/pages/clublisting. 12 TechTopics | Spring 2009 http://www.gtalumni.org/pages/studentrecruiting http://www.gtalumni.org/pages/clublisting http://www.gtalumni.org/careerfair http://www.gtalumni.org/careerfair
