Tech Topics - Winter 2008 - (Page 17) 2007-08 HIGHLIGHTS Students Shine • Biomedical engineering major Andrea Barrett won a Goldwater Scholarship. • Inn Inn Chen, BME 08, was named a Marshall Scholar. • Earth and atmospheric sciences major Thomas Christian won Tech’s first Morris Udall Scholarship. • Fulbright Scholarships were awarded to Thomas Earnest, IntA 07; Halley Espy, IntA 08; and Daniel Shorr, Psy 08. • Reeve Ingle, EE 08, was named the national 2007 Coop Student of the Year. • Nicole Larsen, a double major in physics and mathematics, was awarded funds from the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation. • Andrew Marin, ChBE 08, was named a Gates Cambridge Scholar. • Adam Tart, DMath 07, MS Stat 08, received a George J. Mitchell Scholarship. Faculty Excel • National Science Foundation CAREER awards were given to Yury Bakhtin, C. Karen Liu and Johnna Temenoff. • Named Sloan Foundation fellows were Dan Breznitz, Nicholas Feamster, King Jordan and Adam Kalai. • Contributing to the work of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, which won the Nobel Peace Prize with former Vice President Al Gore, were Tech faculty Marilyn Brown, Robert Dickinson and Rong Fu. • Elected fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science were Judith Curry, Randall Engle, Cheryl Leggon and Rick Trebino. • Named 2008 Georgia Cancer Coalition Distinguished Cancer Scholars were Yuhong Fan, Melissa Kemp, Francesca Storici and Ming Yuan. • Jim Foley, College of Computing interim dean, was elected to the National Academy of Engineering and received Tech’s 2008 Distinguished Professor Award. • Professor William Koros received a $10 million research grant from the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology. • Georgia Tech Savannah assistant professor Elliot Moore, EE 98, MS EE 99, PhD ECE 03, received the President’s Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers. Athletic Achievements • All-American Andrea McDowell won Tech’s first individual tennis title at the NCAA national singles championships. • Tennis player Kristi Miller, who graduated in May with a 4.0 grade point average, was named ESPN The Magazine’s At-Large Academic All-American of the Year. • The women’s tennis team advanced to the Elite Eight in the NCAA tournament. • Talisa Kellogg and Ulrike Stegemann, Mgt 08, were named to the 2007 All-ACC volleyball team. • Softball player Aileen Morales broke the school’s single-season record with 45 stolen bases. • The swimming and diving teams set 19 school records; Hannah Krimm and Stephanie England became Tech’s first female swimming and diving AllAmericans.
