Tech Topics - Winter 2008 - (Page 30) BURDELL & FRIENDS Ramblin’ Roll 1950s Robert S. “Bob” Duggan Jr., EE 51, MS EE 56, was awarded the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Member and Geographic Activities Board’s William W. Middleton Distinguished Service Award for 2008 in September. Duggan was recognized “for a lifetime of outstanding leadership, support, positive thinking and a powerful influence that encouraged others to follow him in the spirit of his service promoting the IEEE geographic activities and the engineering profession.” Gene Espy, IM 50, was honored by the Appalachian Long Distance Hikers Association for his gifts to the Appalachian Trail community at a gathering in October. In 1951, Espy walked from Georgia to Maine and became the second person ever to hike the entire trail in a continuous thru-hike. Espy lives in Macon, Ga. Henn Rebane, EE 57, of Tampa, Fla., accepted the position of president of the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying for 2008-09 at the council’s annual meeting in August. Rebane has been a member of the Florida Board of Professional Engineers for nine years, serving two terms as board chair, and was chair of the advisory committee on council activities. Rebane also served as secretary/treasurer of the NCEES Southern Zone. Taz Anderson Jr., IM 61, of Atlanta, has been appointed to the board of governors of the George L. Smith II Georgia World Congress Center Authority by Gov. Sonny Perdue. Anderson is chairman and general manager of Taz Anderson Realty Co. and founder of Taz Media Group. He serves on the board of directors for the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Foundation and was named to the Georgia Tech Athletics Hall of Fame, Greater Savannah Athletic Hall of Fame and Georgia Sports Hall of Fame. He is head of team marketing for the 2008 Georgia Sports Hall of Fame induction ceremonies and is a member of the Hall of Fame nominating committee. He and his wife, Jane, have three children and three grandchildren. 1960s Cletus “Mel” Bost Jr., Phys 69, MS NE 70, is manager of business technology with the process and treating engineering group of Exterran Corp. in Broken Arrow, Okla. Bost has more than 30 years of experience in the automotive and energy industries, working with Ford Motor Co., ARCO, UNOCAL, Tosco, Phillips and ConocoPhillips. He and his wife, Linda, live in Owasso, Okla. Ed Faber Jr., Text 66, is a photographer of Georgia wildlife and nature. His photographs have been displayed in 22 countries across seven continents, appearing in four American embassies as well as Buckingham Palace and American military installations. Faber also works as a certified public accountant. Gordon Moulton, IM 65, president of the University of South Alabama, and his wife, Geri, have donated $3 million toward research at the university’s Mitchell Cancer Institute. The Moultons’ gift will establish the Geri and Gordon Moulton Research Fund. The trustees of the university have named the main research floor of the institute for the couple. Moulton is a cancer survivor. John R. “Rob” Neely, ME 60, and his wife, Jerry, celebrated their 50th anniversary on June 14. The couple have a son, daughter and five grandsons. Neely is president of Ful-Bro Engineering Inc., an HVAC company in Atlanta. A. Richard Royal, IE 62, of Camilla, Ga., president and owner of Royal Investments Inc., Baby’s First Ball Game One-year-old Patrick Ryan Smyth already has a seat reserved for him in the stands of Bobby Dodd Stadium. Patrick, accompanied by parents Karen and Michael Smyth, CE 94, attended his first Yellow Jackets football game in September. Patrick dressed appropriately, donning a Buzz Tshirt for the game against Mississippi State. His parents are familiar faces in the crowd. A photo of the couple taken by an Alumni Association photographer at the Homecoming 2003 football game has appeared on the Alumni Association’s Web site as well as in TECH TOPICS, the Georgia Tech Alumni Magazine and brochures for alumni events. Patrick, who celebrated his first birthday on Sept. 6, loved the game, his mother said, but his favorite part was meeting the cheerleaders. “Michael and I bought two more season tickets to add to our original two so that we would have space for Patrick and, hopefully, baby number two,” Karen said. 30 TechTopics | Winter 2008
