Ramblin’ Roll Snowbound in Greenland for Science B 34 rad Whelchel, ME 03, arrived at Greenland’s Summit Station in early November as part of a four-person team that will maintain the facility and conduct atmospheric and climate experiments through mid-February. “The station is the highest point in the Arctic Circle, the sun sets and does not rise for two months, temperatures can reach minus 75 degrees Fahrenheit and snow accumulation will constantly try to bury the station,” Whelchel said. Before they embarked on the mission, the team members had to undergo survival training as the closest assistance is 700 miles away. “All of the polar workers I’ve talked to said they cannot describe the temperature, it must be felt to be believed,” Whelchel said. “Apparently there are fun things one can do in minus 75 degrees, like take a cup of boiling water, throw it outside and watch it freeze into ice crystals before hitting the ground.” TechTopics | Winter 2008
