A Navy veteran, he was a member of Chi Psi fraternity at Tech and served as president of the Houston Georgia Tech Club. James Charles Cooley, IE 56, of Franklin, Va., on Sept. 27. Mr. Cooley retired from International Paper Inc. after 37 years with the company. Following graduation from Georgia Tech, Mr. Cooley served three years in the Marine Corps and achieved the rank of first lieutenant. Frederick Claiborne Craig, Arch 52, of Jackson, Miss., on Sept. 30. After serving as a lieutenant in the Army in Korea, Mr. Craig returned to Jackson in 1960 and began a lengthy career as a custom home builder. He was a member of Kappa Alpha fraternity at Tech. William F. Elliott Jr., IM 51, of Woodstock, Ga., on April 15. A member of Kappa Sigma at Tech, Mr. Elliott retired from Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Co. Ottis O. Forester, IE 51, of Canal Winchester, Ohio, on Sept. 7. A Navy veteran, Mr. Forester worked for Rockwell and as an engineer for the IRS. James L. Gossett, Text 50, of Huntsville, Ala., on Sept. 15. Mr. Gossett retired as an operations research analyst for the Army Missile Command. He served as a first sergeant during World War II and as a paratrooper officer during the Korean War. He earned an MBA from Alabama A&M. William Henry Holman Jr., ME 52, of Jackson, Miss., on Oct. 6. Following service in the military, Mr. Holman joined the family business, Jitney-Jungle Stores of America Inc., in Jackson. He served as chairman of the board and CEO for the next 34 years. Under his leadership, Jitney-Jungle grew to more than 100 stores and 9,000 employees. In Jackson, he served as president of the Chamber of Commerce, as an executive committee member of the Mississippi Baptist Medical Center, on the board of directors of Goodwill Industries and as chairman of the University of Mississippi business advisory committee. He was named Young Man of the Year by the Jackson Jaycees in 1965; selected Marketer of the Year for the state of Mississippi in 1989; and chosen as the Captain of Industry by the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation in 1992. In 1993, he and his wife were named People of Vision by the Mississippi affiliate of the National Society to Prevent Blindness. After graduating from Tech, where he was a member of Phi Delta Theta, he served in the Army as a first lieutenant in Europe and later attained the rank of major in the active reserves. Robert James Hostetler, AE 53, of East Lansing, Mich., on Sept. 30. He retired from the Army’s Tank Automotive Research, Development and Engineering Center in Warren, Mich., in 1990. During his engineering career, Mr. Hostetler developed aircraft landing gear with the Bendix Corp.; designed and tested missiles for the Air Force; and helped build the Apollo Lunar Surface Experiments Package while working for Bendix Aerospace. At Tech, he was a member of the Navy ROTC and lettered in cross country. Following graduation, he served as a Navy aviator. While based in Guam, he flew into typhoons to collect weather data. Gene Kenneth Johnson, IE 56, of Savannah, Ga., on Oct. 6. Mr. Johnson was a former employee with Johns Manville and retired from Kemira in 1995. An Army veteran of the Korean War, he was active with Gideons International. H. Harvey Langston, ME 50, of Midland, Texas, on Aug. 18. He founded H. Langston Realtors with his wife. Before attending Georgia Tech, he was a pilot in the Army Air Corps, serving in England and France. Bill G. Martin, IM 57, of Gadsden, Ala., on Aug. 25. Mr. Martin was a Realtor and real estate prelicense instructor in Gadsden for 25 years. He served as a pilot in the Navy during the Korean War. Gwinn Edward “Stretch” Moss, IE 56, of Lincolnton, N.C., on Sept. 5, 2007. Mr. Moss worked for McLean Trucking Co. in Winston-Salem for many years. He spent much of his time boating on Lake Norman and designed and built a log cabin on the lake in Mooresville. G. Burns Porter Jr., IE 51, of Dunwoody, Ga., on April 29. Mr. Burns, whose career as an engineer included stints with Lockheed and Scientific Atlanta, retired as president of Scientific Control Systems Inc. Jere Madison Pound III, Cls 52, of Columbus, Ga., on Aug. 21. Mr. Pound’s career included positions with the brokerage firm Spencer-Zimmerman-Pound and Co., Columbus Mills Inc., J.M. Pound & Sons and Whitecrest Mills. He received a bachelor’s degree from Tulane University in 1952 and served as a captain in the Marine Corps. He was a past member of the board of directors of the American Red Cross. Charles T. Rucker, EE 58, of Alpharetta, Ga., on Sept. 25. Mr. Rucker began his engineering career with Sperry Rand in Clearwater, Fla., and ended it as a research electrical engineer at the Georgia Tech Research Institute. He was a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and a past president and life fellow of the Microwave Technique and Theory Society. Before attending Tech, Mr. Rucker spent four years in the Navy and served in Alaska and the Pacific theater. In Memoriam Gayle Newton Manley, IE 58, of Albany, Ga., on Aug. 9, from injuries sustained in a car crash. Since 1981, Mr. Manley had owned and operated his own real estate development company. He moved to Albany in 1964 to establish the M&M/Mars Candy plant and served as its vice president/general manager until 1975. He worked for the state of Georgia during Gov. George Busbee’s administration from 1976 to ’81. Mr. Manley was a founding director and chairman for more than 20 years of the Municipal Electric Authority of Georgia. He had served as a director of the Phoebe Putney Hospital Foundation; Albany Water, Gas, and Light Commission; Radium Springs Preservation Group Inc., for which he also had served as president; National Peanut Council; and the Peanut Butter and Nut Salters Association. Mr. Manley attended Georgia Tech on a football scholarship and started on the freshman team as a center and linebacker in 1953. He was inducted into the Colquitt County Sports Hall of Fame. Albert Cheves Skellie, EE 50, MS EE 51, of Houston, on Sept. 24. A Navy veteran of World War II, Mr. Skellie spent 36 years working for Schlumberger and 17 years for the IRS. Thomas Argo Smith Jr., IM 52, of Savannah, Ga., on Sept. 15. He joined the Corps of Engineers and later worked at Thomas and Hutton and for the city of Savannah as assistant city engineer. Mr. Smith retired in 1986 after 12 years as county engineer. In 1970, he co-founded South Atlantic Utilities, which has grown into an operator of water and wastewater systems in southeast Georgia. He was a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers. Mr. Smith enlisted in the Marine Corps after graduating from high school and was a member of the 6th Marine Division, participating in the invasion of Okinawa and the occupation of TechTopics | Winter 2008 41
