Origins of the Big Easy The origins are hazy, but reportedly, it’s a nickname early jazz musicians gave to the city. It was repopularized in the early 1970s when The Times-Picayune’s gossip columnist of the times, Betty Guillaud, championed its use in response to New York becoming the Big Apple. At the same time, James Calloway, another Picayune reporter, published a novel called The Big Easy, which was the basis for the 1984 film starring Dennis Quaid, Ellen Barkin and John Goodman. The Changing Face of Golf Forum 11 am – 12:30 pm Join us as two groundbreaking women share their experiences as they pursued their dreams in the golf industry. They will also share their insights and advice on how the game of golf can be brought to more diverse audiences. Renee Powell is the second of only three African-American women to ever play on the Ladies Professional Golf Association Tour. She got her start at Clearview Golf Club in East Canton, Ohio, which was built by her father after World War II and is the only course in the world designed, built, owned and operated by an African-American. Powell is also a recipient of the PGA of America’s First Lady in Golf Award, and earlier this year was presented with an Honorary Doctor of Laws Degree from the University of St. Andrews in Scotland – the first female golfer and only the third American to receive the award. Monica Lalinde, CGCS at Smyrna (Tenn.) Municipal Golf Course, operates a 27-hole facility, with 9 holes serving as a First Tee facility. Born and raised in Colombia, Lalinde originally pursued playing on the LPGA Tour, but began studying turfgrass management after an injury forced a change in plans. She earned her CGCS designation in 2001. Moderator: Sean A. Hoolehan, CGCS Speakers: Renee Powell, LLD Monica Lalinde, CGCS Register at www.gcsaa.org/conference 9 http://www.gcsaa.org/conference
