Originally an Indian trading post located on the banks of the Mississippi, the French were looking for an area where they could establish a port on this mighty river, which stretches from the Gulf of Mexico to French Canada. Thus was the foundation of this quaint and lovely European city. As you leave the convention center, your tour guide will begin your introduction to this wonderful city called New Orleans. The first point of interest is Jackson Square, located in the heart of the French Quarter. A short 30-minute walking tour will give you an up-close experience with famous landmarks including the St. Louis Cathedral, Presbytere, Cabildo and the Pontalba buildings. After your visit to the French Quarter, you will proceed to City Park and Bayou St. John, where you will visit the historic St. Louis No. 3 Cemetery. Learn about the unique aboveground burial system utilized in New Orleans because of its location below sea level. You will see the exquisite St. Charles Avenue — known locally as just “The Avenue” — with its rows of magnificent homes and mansions. Along the way, you’ll also pass the picturesque Tulane and Loyola universities. As you depart this lovely residential area, you will pass the Warehouse District, a revitalized area that is also home to the convention center. As the tour ends, you will indeed have a unique overview of this incredible and historic city called New Orleans, or the “City That Care Forgot.” The Traditions of Mardi Gras . . . and Mask Making á la New Orleans 1 – 4 pm $73 Adult/Child (lunch not included) FRIDAY, FEB. 6 Audubon Adventure . . .
