For this exclusive look at the film, Geek
hung with Holland and director Jon Watts
(Cop Car), who spin an intriguing inside
look. And with that, the punning comes to
an end.

SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING
AS HIGH SCHOOL MOVIE
I always just go back to
the source material. That's where you just
get back to the original spirit of what made
Spider-Man such a sensation in the first
place. In the first issues of the books, he's
this really self-conscious, nervous, nerdy
high school kid. He gets this amazing ability,
but he still has the exact same level of selfdoubt and insecurity that he had before he
got his super powers. It's what made him
so likable and relatable. He's always trying
to find his place in the world. You have big
dreams and ambitions, but you're not sure
if you're really going to be good enough, you
know? It's about growing up.

// J O N WAT T S //

// T O M H O L L A N D // I wanted to see the
youthful side of the character. He is a
15-year-old kid, and that's what makes him
so amazing is that he's not a grown up. He's
not a brilliant scientist. He is just simply

a kid. That's very apparent in the comics,
so when we were going through the script
and then started shooting Homecoming,
every opportunity we had to make him feel
as youthful and as innocent as possible,
we really tried to drive home. It's very
important that kids in high school are able
to see a superhero going through the same
things that they're going through. Missing
school, struggling with your chemistry
homework, talking to girls. I think it's very
reassuring that they know that they're not
the only ones going through that. I wanted
to make sure the audience can relate with

him, and also go along with his journey as if
they're actually a part of it.

THE CIVIL WAR CONNECTION
// T O M H O L L A N D // You know, that whole
thing was very surreal, if I'm honest. I
mean, I was really thrown in the deep end.
After the most bizarre and intense casting
process I've ever been through, I was quickly
thrown into shooting and my first scene
was with Robert Downey Jr., which was as
surreal as the idea of being Spider-Man
was. I know it was a pretty crazy start for
me. What's interesting about Homecoming
