Marvel's Inhumans: From Dee
by Edward Gross

YOU HAVE TO GIVE MARVEL STUDIOS
CREDIT FOR ORIGINALITY. Not only has
it built an empire on the big screen since
the 2008 release of Iron Man, but it's also
conquering the small screen by taking the
same types of chances. Marvel's Inhumans
is a perfect example: Its two-hour premiere
is being released theatrically exclusively in
IMAX theaters in September for two weeks
prior to the start of the eight-episode first
season on ABC.
Marvel notes that the show will tell the
story of the genetically enhanced royal
family of Inhumans, which is splintered by
a military coup and barely able to escape
to Earth in general, Hawaii in particular.
"What stood out about it for me was
that it was a show about family," says
executive producer/showrunner Scott
Buck, uttering the new f-word popularized
by the Fast and Furious and Guardians of
the Galaxy films. "I'm always drawn to
projects that are about strong, interesting,
compelling characters, and this one was
about a group of them. There's a huge
history of the Inhumans. There are so many
comic books going back to the mid-'60s,
but there's also so many different takes on
them. Sometimes they're very serious and
dark, and other times they're kind of silly
and playful, so it allowed us to sift through
all this and see what is most compelling.
Because even then, what works in a
comic book doesn't necessarily always
easily translate to the screen. It's sifting
through and figuring out what's going to
make the most interesting story and what
version of this or that character is the most
compelling to us."
Roel Reiné, director of the IMAX premiere
and whose previous directorial credits
include the series Black Sails, has been
challenged with creating a big-screen,
IMAX-worthy premiere that leads into a
television series in a very different format.
"The scope is huge, the ambition
is huge," he explains. "Even from the
locations that we picked to the sets that
we designed and built. But you have to
fall in love with these characters. You
want to know how they continue. The
series may have a little less scope, but
