still has a lot of action and size to it. But
what is really interesting is what these
characters are developing into in those
other episodes, where you're building to in
their development, so you don't need the
scope all the time. Even in my episodes,
there are big scope moments, but also
a lot of TV drama, close-ups, dialogue
scenes, dramatic scenes that are really
entertaining and wonderful and emotional.
That's a big focus for me."
Regarding the characters themselves,
Buck breaks it all down:
Black Bolt (Anson Mount): King of
the Inhumans who doesn't speak, as the
tiniest whisper would unleash a sonic wave
that could level an entire city. "Difficult
character to write. You have to really sort
of get inside his brain and see everything
through his eyes. You need someone
to bring that to life, which is why we
really responded to Anson, because he's
someone eager to take on the challenge
and he's been terrific so far."
Medusa (Serinda Swan): Bride of
Black Bolt, her hair is a deadly weapon!
"With Medusa, we needed this strong,
almost fierce, kind of woman who also
can be this very regal queen, and we found
that with Serinda."
Maximus (Iwan Rheon): Brother of
Black Bolt, he's devoted to his people but
desires the Inhumans throne. "Our main

villain and perhaps the most complicated
of our characters in some ways. We didn't
want a standard villain. Instead, when you
have the opportunity to watch, you'll see
that he's perhaps our most tragic figure
and we don't despise him. We understand
his situation as the only human among all
the Inhumans."
Karnak (Ken Leung): Cousin to Black
Bolt, a close adviser with the power to see
fault in virtually anything, whether it be
plans, people or even structures. "He was
actually the very first person we cast. Ken
is so easily able to display the depth, the
complexity, the inner mind of this brilliant
character."
Crystal (Isabelle Cornish): Endowed
with the ability to control the elements,
she is Medusa's sister. "We needed
someone who could really bring forth
that princess quality, yet still feel real and
relatable as a teenager. With Isabelle, we
found exactly what we were looking for."
Gorgon (Eme Ikwuakor): Black Bolt's
cousin and leader of the Inhumans military.
"We wanted to create a character who was
a powerful force, had an ego to match but
also had to be incredibly likable. Eme just
has this amazing charm that he brings to
the character that just makes him instantly
likable."
Additional characters include Auran
(Sonya Blamores), in charge of the Royal
Guards; Triton (Mike Moh), endowed with
aquatic abilities; and the CG Lockjaw, a
2,000 pound dog endowed with the power
of teleportation.
Musing on what audiences can expect
from Inhumans, Reiné reflects, "These
characters are very grounded in reality and
how normal people are - even if they have
special skills or are like superheroes. What I
really liked is the idea of being a superhero
and seeing that view of the world, and
what you kind of think about humans. And
then finding yourself stranded on Earth and
being forced to interact with humans.
"It's interesting, because it was a big
conflict internally with them on how to act
normal or be subject to a normal world
when you're used to being a royal family.
That is really appealing."

MARVEL'S
OTHER

FIRST
FAMILY
The Inhumans were first introduced
in the pages of Marvel's classic
Fantastic Four comic, about another
dysfunctional superhero family. So far
it's been a challenge to get Marvel's
first Silver Age heroes right. Here's
how they stack up:

FANTASTIC FOUR
(2005)
(20 TH CENTURY FOX)

Barbershop director
Tim Story brought a
light touch that worked
perfectly for Michael Chicklis' turn as
the Thing and Chris Evans' superhero
debut as the Human Torch - but
the action and a particularly bad
take on Doctor Doom keeps this one
earthbound.

FANTASTIC FOUR:
RISE OF THE
SILVER SURFER
(2007)
(20 TH CENTURY FOX)

The FF play second
fiddle to a snazzy take on the Silver
Surfer, played by Doug Jones and
voiced by Lawrence Fishburne.

FANTASTIC FOUR
(2015)
Maybe the Tim Story
FFs were too goofy,
but Josh Trank's dark
reboot is closer to the
mood of the DC movies than Marvel's
brighter comic universe.
