World's Finest

DIRECTOR PATTY JENKINS' WONDER
WOMAN is the best DC superhero movie
so far. Convincingly presenting this classic
comic book character to a contemporary
audience - miniskirt, armored bustier,
lasso, tiara and all - is an impressive
achievement. Wonder Woman's quasimagical powers and mythological
background defy the gritty, grounded
realism the DC movies strive for.
Jenkins already had a leg up with the
casting of Gal Gadot as Diana Prince,
introduced as Wonder Woman in Batman
v Superman. Gadot's Israeli accent solves
the problem of presenting Wonder Woman
at face value. The minute she speaks, her
Diana Prince seems to hail from another
time and place. Early on, Jenkins efficiently
presents a lavish island of Amazons into
which Chris Pine's pilot/spy Steve Trevor
intrudes. Jenkins gets great chemistry from
Pine and Gadot, allowing the movie to
coast on their budding romance.
There's also fun to be had from Diana's
fish-out-of-water introduction to London
(Pretty Woman-style shopping montage
included) and the world of men, as she
searches for Ares, the god she believes has
caused the First World War that threatens
her secret island and the rest of the planet.
The action doesn't really get rolling until
Diana takes charge on the battlefield, in a
bravura "no man's land" sequence that is
easily the highlight of the movie. Deflecting

machine-gun and
rocket fire with her
shield and leaping
over the German lines
in a single bound, Diana
flexes her superhero
muscles not out of some
need for revenge or as a
manly rite of passage, but
out of compassion for the
victims of warfare, even
the Germans. This is why
we watch superhero movies:
to see someone help others
and solve problems in a way
no ordinary human being ever
could.
The rest of the movie can't match
those heights, although Jenkins and
cinematographer Matthew Jensen serve up
a banquet of iconic, fiery images of Wonder
Woman in action. The movie's villains
(including Danny Huston and Elena Alaya)
are ineffectual, but Wonder Woman's final

battle with Ares has a point. When Ares tells
her that humans, not gods, are responsible
for the evil of war, Diana replies, "It's all about
what you believe. I believe in love."
After early buzz pointed toward the film
being another disappointment, Warner Bros.
seemed blindsided by Wonder Woman's $100
million-plus opening and will have to
scramble to sign Jenkins to a sequel. More
importantly, the movie's success might finally
open up the boys' club of blockbusters to
female writers, directors and audiences.
Wonder Woman may believe in love, but
Hollywood believes in box office.

Director and overseer Zack Snyder has established a vivid look for the first three movies
in the DC universe. Here's how they stack up on disc:

BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE

Gal Gadot's Wonder Woman made her crowd-pleasing debut
in this set-up for the events of the upcoming Justice League,
and Ben Affleck's no-nonsense Batman takes on Lex Luthor's
gang and the Man of Steel himself in some vivid action
sequences.

Henry Cavill more than looks
the part as Superman, and
the city-smashing finale is
a great showcase for 4K.
Michael Shannon's General Zod is a solid
villain but Russell Crowe's Jor-El almost
manages to steal the movie.

Suicide Squad's characters
- including one of Will
Smith's best recent roles
as Deadshot and a killer
Harley Quinn from Margo Robbie - make
it at least as fun and entertaining as its
predecessors.
