Just a day trip away, and closer for some North Georgians, Tennessee’s vacation offerings include the Great Smoky Mountains, Dollywood, Nashville’s Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum and Memphis’ historic Beale Street. Tennessee has been home to three U.S. presidents and has more Civil War sites than any state except Virginia. “The state has more than 800 festivals annually, and most feature great music and food,” says Cindy Dupree, director of communications with the Tennessee Department of Tourist Development. “The diversity of the state’s attractions means that there’s something for everyone to enjoy— from music to whitewater rafting, from festivals to fine arts, from history to the celebration of nature.” Commemorating its 75th anniversary, Great Smoky Mountains National Park is a half-million scenic acres that span Eastern Tennessee and Western North Carolina. Seventy miles of the Appalachian Trail traverse the park, which is the most-visited park in the national park system. A special highlight of any visit is a drive, hike or bicycle ride along the 11-mile loop in scenic Cades Cove. The park includes waterfalls, high peaks (the highest is Clingman’s Dome at 6,643 feet above sea level), and more than 800 miles of trails in Tennessee and North Carolina. “Anytime is a wonderful time to www.georgiamagazine.org Tennessee: Home of Dolly Parton visit the Great Smokies, but the fall— it really goes without saying—is by far the most beautiful,” says Nancy Gray, public affairs park ranger with the National Park Service at the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. “The colors of the diverse trees become so intense against the deep blue skies of autumn that it will take your breath away.” Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge and Sevierville are the gateway towns to the Smokies, with activities for the entire family, including Dollywood, Ripley’s Aquarium of the Smokies, Dixie Stampede Dinner and Show, as well as great theaters, restaurants, shopping and outdoor recreation.
