COMPILED BY JENNIFER J. HEWETT CENSUS 2010: Stand up and be counted This month, U.S. Census Bureau forms will arrive at every residence in the nation. Results of the questionnaire will produce an official count of everyone residing in the United States. The straightforward census questionnaire includes 10 questions and takes about 10 minutes to answer. Questions are as simple as: “How many people were living or staying in this house, apartment or mobile home on April 1, 2010?” and “What is your telephone number?” Heads of household who fill out the form are asked to share basic information on all who reside in the home. All personal data provided in the census is protected under federal law, and the information is not published. All U.S. Census Bureau employees take an oath of nondisclosure and are sworn for life to protect the confidentiality of the data they collect. Violation of this law is a crime with severe penalties, including a fine of up to $250,000 or imprisonment of up to five years, or both. Results of the census, taken at the beginning of each new decade, are used to determine how $400 billion in federal monies are divided among states and communities to fund hospitals, job training centers, schools, senior centers, emergency services, bridges and other public works projects. The count also determines how many seats each state gets in the U.S. House of Representatives. A postage-paid envelope is provided with each census, making it convenient to return.
