COMPILED BY VICTORIA SCHARF DECASTRO Hunger Walk/Run 2010 Despite inclement weather, associates from Tucker-based Georgia Electric Membership Corp. (EMC), Georgia Systems Operations Corp., Georgia Transmission Corp. and Oglethorpe Power Corp. participated in the 26th Annual Hunger Walk/Run 2010 in downtown Atlanta March 14. More than 10,000 people participated in the 5K event, which was sponsored by the Atlanta Community Food Bank and created in response to local and global hunger. Fernando Alfaro, Steve Caison, Zakia El Omari, Danette Foster, Michael Fourman, Veronica Harrison, Monica Heath, Susan Ingall, Thomas Leslie, Lois Mason, Angela Mills, Adolfo Ponce de Leon, Betsy Verner, Bill Verner, Dorothy Verner, Josephine Verner, Marion Wright and Ronson Wylie comprised Team Georgia EMC. Through pledges from family and friends, they raised $1,773.50, far exceeding their $1,000 team goal. COURTESY IRWIN EMC Hope Paulk accepts the Georgia Young Farmers Association spokesperson award from Keith Holmes, GYFA North Region director. Speaking for young farmers Hope Paulk, a marketing specialist at Irwin Electric Membership Corp. in Ocilla, won the 2010 Georgia Young Farmers Association state spokesperson award at the recent GYFA state convention. Paulk’s speech “What’s on your plate?” discussed the need to reconnect the general public to agriculture. Why did she enter the contest? “I am married to a young farmer teacher/part-time farmer and have a degree in agriculture communications. So agriculture is very near and dear to my heart,” Paulk explains, adding, “I also like to eat every day and am so grateful for the people who till the soil to provide me with a safe, affordable source of healthy food. There are millions of people who are not as fortunate as we are in America. To have life-sustaining food so readily available is truly a gift that we take for granted, and I wanted to, in some small way, get that message across.” 14 Snapping Shoals honored by Tree Line USA Snapping Shoals EMC in Covington is the first electric cooperative in Georgia to receive the Tree Line USA recognition from the Arbor Day Foundation for its leadership in caring for trees while meeting service objectives. The Tree Line USA program acknowledges utilities that demonstrate practices that protect and enhance America’s urban forests. The program’s aim is to promote the dual goals of safe, reliable electric service and abundant, healthy trees across utility service areas. “We felt that the ideals of Tree Line USA marry well with Snapping Shoals EMC’s philosophy of providing value to our members. Trees are a big part of energy conservation, which in turn helps our members save,” says Victor Hurst, vice president of line services at Snapping Shoals EMC.
