Twenty endangered whooping cranes following an ultralight aircraft departed from Decatur County in January as part of Operation Migration. The ultralight-guided migration passed through seven states and began Oct. 23 in Necedah National Wildlife Refuge in Central Wisconsin. Check out the Georgia Lyme Disease Association’s new Web site, www.georgialymedisease. org, to learn about and recognize the early signs and symptoms of Lyme disease. 8 COURTESY OPERATION MIGRATION New license plate preserves Appalachian Trail The Appalachian Trail Conservancy and volunteers through its affiliate Georgia Appalachian Trail Club recently announced the establishment of a Georgia Appalachian Trail specialty license plate, to bring recognition to the legendary footpath that starts in Georgia and ends in Maine. To date, more than 600 of the required 1,000 applications have been submitted by Georgia residents to initiate production of the plates. These license plates will help www.georgiamagazine.org raise awareness of the trail, and volunteers will pursue legislation from the state to provide a source of ongoing funding to maintain, manage and protect the first 78 miles of the 2,179mile Appalachian National Scenic Trail that welcomes more than 4 million visitors annually.
