Crossties not organic In your April 2010 issue [see “Eat organically at home,” page 40], I was quite disturbed to see the author recommending “old poles or crossties” to be used in a backyard “organic” garden. Your readers should know that old telephone poles, which are pictured in this article as a border for a backyard organic garden, are poisonous and contain carcenogenic compounds. These old telephone poles contain arsenic, chromium and possibly creosote that can leach out into your garden when watered or from rain. Any old crossties from railroad tracks contain arsenic, chromium and creosote as well, and should not be used in any type of garden, whether organic or not.
