He was born in 1909 on a rural farm near Bruno, Neb. His father passed away, leaving a young mother, who barely spoke English, with three boys under 10 years of age. By the time he was in his mid-20s, he and his young wife had lost a farm in the middle of the Depression. In 1974, I finished early with a business trip in Chicago. By this time, Mom had passed away, and the nine children were out of the house, so I decided to fly back to Nebraska to spend a few days with Dad. At this time, Dad’s fortunes had changed, and he was a very successful farmer. In the course of the next few days, he and I covered many subjects. As this was a man who had experienced both ends of the financial spectrum, I asked him what was one of the best events in his life. He said it was when the REA brought electricity to the farm. It made milking easy, extended the day and made reading enjoyable.
