The ceremony took place at the Altamaha Technical College before a crowd of Southeast Georgia leaders and state transportation officials. The ceremony ended with the unveiling of a new sign that will be put up on the road. REA: The early years COURTESY DIVERSE POWER Annual meeting: The biggest day of the year Before there were neighborhood block parties or countless entertainment options vying for attendance, annual meetings of electric cooperatives were often a community’s biggest event of the year. As member-owned cooperatives, Georgia’s electric membership corporations (EMCs) conduct formal business with all members invited once a year to elect directors and vote on important decisions regarding their co-op. Since EMCs were formed in the late 1930s, the state’s cooperatives have welcomed members to annual meetings packed with food, fun and fellowship. In the early days of annual meetings, thousands attended these popular events where friends gathered to demonstrate loyalty to their electric cooperatives and learn more about them. Drawing guests from every corner of their service territories, co-ops strived to put on a great gathering, complete with everything from home-cooked barbecue to nationally recognized entertainers. Today, annual meetings continue to host hundreds for food and entertainment, which varies from coop to co-op, with some holding early-morning events, while others opt for afternoon meetings. A staple at all annual meetings remains unchanged: updating member-owners about their electric co-op in a forum that provides one-on-one interaction.
