I t all started with a baseball player named Ty Cobb. “The Georgia Peach,” from Royston, played center ﬁeld for the Detroit Tigers. Widely regarded as one of the best baseball players of all time, Cobb was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1936, and his early 20th-century records still remain unbroken. Today, Royston is not only Cobb’s ﬁnal resting place, but is also home to the Ty Cobb Healthcare System (TCHS) and the Ty Cobb Museum. TCHS opened when Cobb donated $100,000 to start construction of the 24-bed hospital in honor of his parents. Today, the system has two full hospitals, three nursing homes and one retirement center. The Ty Cobb Museum opened in 1998 to commemorate the life of this legendary man with his personal items, baseball gear, art and other memorabilia. The museum also houses the Franklin County Sports Hall of Fame and the Cobb Theater, which shows videos of Cobb that feature celebrities such as Atlanta Braves player Chipper Jones and legendary Georgia Bulldogs sports announcer Larry Munson. As a nonproﬁt organization, the Ty Cobb Museum created the “Cobb Family Cookbook” to help fund its operations. Compiled by the museum’s staff, the cookbook has more than 300 recipes shared by Cobb’s family, the TCHS family and members of the community. Southern cooking plays a big part in this Georgia-made cookbook, with its deviled eggs and squash casserole recipes, but dishes like the Denver Omelet Pie, Berry Goat Cheese and Pistachio Salad and Geor- gia Peach Pie (of course!) spring up throughout the “Cobb Family Cookbook” too. Photographs of Cobb appear at the beginning of each section. Below is a sample recipe. Coat a 9x13-inch casserole dish with cooking spray. Combine mustard, brown sugar, cinnamon, ginger, olive oil and apple juice with whisk. Add sweet potatoes and apples and stir to coat. Spread potatoes and apples out in a single layer in casserole dish. Bake for 40 to 50 minutes, or until apples are slightly browned and sweet potatoes are tender. Remove from oven and stir to coat once more. Serve hot. Yields 4 servings.
