You with me, guys? It’s summer in Georgia, and what’s more Southern than car racing and eating barbecue? With its roots in Georgia—yes, running moonshine is where it started—NASCAR (the National Association for Automobile Stock Car Racing) has seen a lot of Georgia drivers and folks in the business since it began in 1947. Though there are NASCAR races across the country year-round, the only official NASCAR race in Georgia is the annual Sprint Cup Race, this year Sept. 2-4, at Hampton-based Atlanta Motor Speedway. As for barbecue, Georgians are raising the bar, according to Georgia’s own resident ’cue expert, writer Jane Garvey. “No American dish is more debated, discussed, cussed and argued over than barbecue,” she says.
