H ere’s a sampling of some Ramble locations to help you get started. All sites for the Fall 2011 Ramble are in Dahlonega except as indicated. You’ll visit • Baptist Student House, 106 S. Park St. Built for U.S. Congressman William Pierce Price’s brother-in-law, Beverly Martin, the house was built in 1882 on land owned by Mrs. William Price. The porches are original, and the façade retains its original Victorian styling. • Bill Scott House, 30 Public Square S. Originally built in 1842, the house was home to the Wicht family, whose pater familias was a professor at the college and a high school teacher. Bill and Mary Scott are its current owners. • Dahlonega Baptist Church, 85 S. Chestatee St. Built in 1897, this church features stained-glass windows that date to 1838. Granite rocks—some still containing gold visible to the naked eye—from a newly opened gold mine form the foundation. The copper lining the baptistry, located behind the stage, comes from moonshine stills and was donated by theoretically repentant distillers. Although not one of the Ramble sites, the 1836 Dahlonega Courthouse today houses the Gold • Hansford Hall, West Main, NCGMuseum, which may be visited while you’re in Dahlonega. SU campus. Its stone masonry foundation and Corinthian columns are hallmarks of its neoclassical style. • Lumpkin Campground, 100 Lumpkin Campround Rd., Dawsonville. The original building and surrounding rustic cabins, called “tents” by church members, are property of the North Georgia Conference of the United Methodist Church. The camp dates to 1830 when 40 Lumpkin County community men donated $1 each to buy the ground for the camp, which still hosts worship ses- sions for church members. • McAfee Davis House, 83 Choice Ave. Built by William H. McAfee, a state senator and minister, the house was sold to Mr. S. Davis. Its current occupants are his granddaughter Bonnie Richmond, and her husband, Ken. • Old Lumpkin County Jail, Clarksville St. Built to house not only lawbreakers but also law enforcers, this building was completed in 1884. The sheriff and his family lived on the first floor, with their charges on the second floor. Renovated in 1985, the building features handmade 1-footthick brick walls.
