t started last year. I had been watching an extremely jocular episode of “Foreign Exchange Student.” The student was a crack-up, and after laughing myself to tears, I vowed never to become an exchange student. “It’s easier to laugh at others than let others laugh at you,” I thought. Time flew, and I had almost forgotten about that episode while signing up for the Youth Exchange and Study Program at my school in Pakistan. The brochure fascinated me. Then I took the SLEP test (which measures a nonnative English speaker’s skill levels in understanding English). It was easy, but it was mostly good luck that I passed it and moved on to the interview. I was running my mouth throughout the interview. Words just slipped out. Guess what? I passed and was selected to be an exchange student from Pakistan to the USA. On Aug. 1, 2010, while dressing for the trip, my heart was heavy, but excitement over the upcoming 10 months covered my face. I reached the airport right on time and was eternally pleased to accompany 69 other scholars from Pakistan. At that moment, the realization of leaving my family was overwhelming. I cried and experienced my mother’s soft, affectionate kisses one last time. Then I left Pakistan. After a 12-hour flight, we reached Washington, D.C. I stepped into a completely different world. We students presented our culture in a fabulous way. Feeling the height of
