n December 2006, Jessica Thompson was having a tough time. She had moved back from Indianapolis, Ind., to her hometown of Augusta because of a relationship, but things hadn’t worked out as she had hoped. Now she was turning 30, and most of her old girlfriends were too busy with their husbands and children to hang out with their single friend. So, the Army librarian did what any gal in her situation would do: She founded a roller derby league. “I was just looking for something to do,” says Thompson. “It seemed like a way to make friends.” Apparently, she’s not the only one who thinks that way. Each week, hundreds of Georgia women don pads, helmets and alter egos with names like Jackie O’Sassin and Violet Seizure to rough it up in the ring. Leagues have also popped up in Atlanta, Athens and Savannah, and the teams travel around the state and the coun-
