Or As Low As n these times of playing softball in a multiﬁeld complex, it is nice to reminisce about small-town ball ﬁelds where young and old could gather to play. One such ﬁeld was created by my parents in the little community of Mystic, ﬁve miles west of Ocilla. In the late 1970s when my sister and I were in high school at nearby Irwin Academy, softball became the favorite sport in our house. The school did not have a dedicated ﬁeld for the team to play on, so Daddy, Lawrence Kittle, solved that problem. We lived in view of the school with only a peanut ﬁeld separating us and the campus. Across the road from our house was another ﬁeld—not a softball ﬁeld, but a farm ﬁeld—complete with a silo and a barn. Daddy had a vision. He knew that we, his girls, would beneﬁt from having our own softball ﬁeld instead of sharing the baseball ﬁeld at the school with the boys.
