Manby has skillfully integrated servant leadership values, such as patience, kindness, honesty, selflessness and respectfulness. “If you treat your employees well and your guests well, the profit flows from that,” Manby says. That Herschend family philosophy has worked well since the company began in the ’50s. The $300 million enterprise has 26 properties in 10 states, including Stone Mountain Park in Stone Mountain and Wild Adventures Theme Park in Valdosta. Manby recently finished a book detailing the company’s management philosophy: “Love Works: Seven Timeless Principles for Effective Leaders.” The book will be released in May with all of the royalties benefiting an employee charitable foundation. Also in this issue, “New Harmonies blossoms” tells of a touring Smithsonian exhibition, cosponsored by the Georgia Humanities Council, that will travel to 12 Georgia towns in its cross-country jaunt. The exhibit, personalized by each town, focuses on the American musical story, which was shaped by native traditions and those brought by generations of people coming to this country.
