Georgia Young Farmers convention highlights More than 700 members and guests of the Georgia Young Farmers Association attended their annual convention in Stone Mountain on Jan. 27-28. Gale Cutler, public relations coordinator at Georgia Electric Membership Corp. (EMC) in Tucker, staffed a booth at the event and offered greetings from Georgia’s electric membership cooperatives at the well-attended luncheon. Cutler, along with Katrina Jones (Georgia FFA Foundation director) and Steve Scoggins, of Chattooga County, were awarded honorary membership in the association. Members elected Carla Payne, of Gordon County, as 2012 board president. Ashley and Kim Lane, from Berrien County, won the Farm Family of the Year award. Tracy Bland, from Telfair County, was the spokesperson winner. 12 Marietta-based Cobb EMC recently hosted a Relay For Life rally for northwest Georgians interested in the American Cancer Society fundraiser. The event, held at the coop March 12, was created to bring together residents from Bartow, Cobb, Douglas and Paulding counties and generate interest for the annual event. Two-year cancer survivor John Alsinger of Carrollton, and Randy Redner, state vice president of the American Cancer Society in Georgia, offered motivational messages and urged attendees to get involved. The 2012 Relay For Life event will be held in 5,100 communities across the nation, and this year’s campaign, “212 in 2012,” encourages participants to each raise $212. Cobb EMC’s Relay For Life Cobb County team hosts fundraisers throughout the year to help raise money for the May 11 event at Jim Miller Park in Marietta. The American Cancer Society Relay For Life began in Tacoma, Wa., in 1985. The 24-hour team relay event raises money to ﬁght cancer and begins with a Survivor’s Lap to celebrate victories. Once night falls, a Luminaria Ceremony begins, to honor and remember those who were lost to the disease. Participants often walk a lap in silence amid the luminaria. A Fight Back Ceremony, where attendees make personal commitments to take action in the ﬁght against cancer, wraps up the event. In March, associates from Tucker-based Georgia EMC, Georgia Systems Operation Corp., Georgia Transmission Corp. and Oglethorpe Power Corp. were able to raise $2,005 for a very worthy cause. They joined 15,000 other walkers and runners logging 75,000 kilometers to take a stand against hunger in Georgia, which is the equivalent of walking around the world almost twice!
