everyone interested in attending the tour purchase their tickets in advance, 1 especially the Candlelight Tour, a limitedcapacity, evening event featuring three of the homes. Tour superstars This year, the Marietta Pil- 2 grimage Tour features homes in the Church-Cherokee Street Historic District. If you’ve ever driven into or out of the Marietta Square from Interstate 75, you’ve traveled these streets. Those who have done so will now have the chance to see ﬁrsthand some of the beautiful old homes that line these streets. At each home, docents, or tour guides, share some of the home’s history, give a bit of background on the owners and point out some of the home’s more interesting furnishings. This year’s tour showcases homes from 1896 through 1925. The ﬁrst is the Dodd-Cook-Lloyd House, a bungalow constructed in 1925. Although it has changed hands and undergone substantial renovations, all the owners kept the look of the original house. Overlooking Church Street, the Simpson-Moor-Pearlberg House was built in 1907 by Barry and Mamie Simpson. Today, it is owned by Van and Patti Pearlberg. Erected in approximately 1900 by Daniel Webster Blair, the BlairRunyon-Gay House had major ﬁre damage in 1939. After extensive repairs as well as some renovations, the house is now owned by Charles and Jennifer Gay. The couple has furnished the home with a collection of English and American antiques, many of which have come from the couple’s families. Keep an eye out for the early 1900s primitive American pump organ! In 1905, successful businessman John C. Cogburn built what is now the Cogburn-Hyde-Roland House for his family, the ﬁrst of three promiNovember 2012 3 4 nent families to live in the home. The Cogburns were followed by the Hyde family, and, today, Mark and Ann Roland reside in the house. The oldest home on the tour, the Morris-Gantt-Stark House was built in 1896 at a cost of $8,000. Originally constructed in the Queen Anne/shingle style of architecture, the Victorian house now boasts a neocolonial façade. The owner, Newton A. Morris, had a very successful career as a superior court judge as well as a state representative. Following the Morris family, the house changed owners several times and is now owned by Michael Stark. Rounding out the featured homes, the Lemmon-Rector-Kirby House represents the booming economy of the 1920s. Built in 1926 by Caroline Lemmon, the home was one of the ﬁrst in Marietta to come with such amenities as natural gas, water and sewer services plus concrete sidewalks.
