houses were hidden by woods; separated from the road by pastures or cotton fields. Even the houses sitting deceptively silent beside the highway concealed the fact that each one represented families and individuals who lived their lives on that spot, the occasional person tinkering in the yard, perhaps giving a laconic wave as you drove by. A large number of these oncelively stores are now closed, roofs falling in, walls creeping with kudzu or trees growing through the porches and floorboards inside, nature reclaiming its spot. COURTESY FRANK FORTSON With the passing of the old country store, small towns across the South have surrendered much of their inborn elegance and charm. Progress and modernization bring us many good things, but also take things away. The sense of community revolving around the old country store is one that is lost. Future generations will be lacking something by their absence. It was a blessing to have experienced this little slice of Southern culture. J.
