He spent most of his time outdoors with his father while growing up in Cordele and now continues the tradition as host of the award-winning show “Backwoods Life.” “Backwoods Life,” now in its eighth season, is based near Valdosta, and chronicles Lee and co-hosts Kevin Knighton and Woody Sullivan’s hunts for various types of deer, elk, black bears and other game in North America. Though the team travels around the nation. “‘Backwoods Life’ originated in the South,” Lee says. “We can’t have a season without at least one hunt on the family farm.” People outside the South and the U.S. now have the chance to see the show on its new network home, the Sportsman Channel. Starting in July 2011, Montgomery began a regimen of 1,000 pushups a week, working up to 1,100 per week when his father-in-law, Gene Rundquist, was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer. Given less than a year’s survival time, Rundquist fought for his life, but cancer ultimately took his life two months after his diagnosis. Montgomery decided the American Cancer Society should beneﬁt from his push-up plan.
