HEWETT I t’s an early March morning in a sleepy suburb north of Atlanta, and cameramen, lighting and sound technicians, directors and producers have already been working for hours setting up for a day of ﬁlming several of this year’s Georgia Grown “Pick, Cook, Keep” TV spots—all to highlight the best of Georgia’s seasonal bounty—from Vidalia onions and blueberries to apples and olive oil. The hustle and bustle of the day is evident. As the chefs arrive, one by one, they are whisked off to makeup, then back to the kitchen to chop, blend, sauté or bake, as they prepare their featured Georgia ingredients on camera. A partnership between the Georgia Department of Agriculture, 36 television and radio spots to educate the public about the many products grown around the state. Featuring Georgia chefs who show how to prepare the seasonal goods, the videos give some background on each crop and its place in Georgia’s history. The narrator also explains how to preserve or store what’s been harvested and prepared. “The ‘Pick, Cook, Keep’ series is all about Georgia’s specialty crops and getting the word out across multiple platforms,” says Carol Danford, corporate account executive with GPB in Atlanta. More online at www.georgiamagazine.org Since December, these “Pick, Cook, Keep” spots have aired on GPB TV and GPB Radio and are now archived on the “Pick, Cook, Keep” website, www.gpb.org/pick-cook-keep. So far they’ve showcased Georgia’s pecans, greens, wine, honey and blueberries. Upcoming segments will highlight melons, peaches, vegetables like Vidalia onions, tomatoes and sweet peppers, and apples.
