Camp Ivy supports, teaches ‘sweet’ kids Diagnosed with diabetes 65 years ago, Ivy Lockett, of Williamson, has made it her mission to educate others about living with the disease and how to better manage it. More than 30 years ago, she started the Fayette Diabetic Association and began a summer camp for “sweet” kids, as she calls them, with Type 1 (insulindependent) diabetes. Celebrating its 36th year, Camp Ivy is set for July 15-19 at Skipstone Academy in Spalding County. “Sweet” kids, their siblings and friends can attend camp to learn about the disease from doctors, nurses, dietitians and other educators, plus have fun swimming and playing sports. “The key to controlling diabetes is learning the rules while you’re young,” Lockett says. “So camp is casual, educational and fun.” Camp wraps up with a picnic for campers’ families. The Georgia Natural Resources Foundation is giving away two lifetime sportsman licenses—one for an adult age 16-64 and one for a youth age 15 and under—in the organization’s Facebook contest. The licenses cover all state paid hunting and ﬁshing requirements for the life of the holder, including big-game July 2013 hunting, wildlife management areas, alligator, salt and freshwater ﬁshing and mountain trout licenses. Winners will be chosen Sept. 2, and the contest is open to Georgia residents who will have lived here at least 12 months by Sept. 2, 2013. Ofﬁcials at Georgia Emergency Management Agency/ Homeland Security (GEMA) are encouraging residents to get ready— and have a disaster plan. “History shows that a lack of awareness and preparation are common threads among all major hurricane disasters,” says Charley English, director of GEMA/Homeland Security. “Being prepared before a hurricane hits is the only way to ensure you will be ready.
