Instead of putting servings on the table, create your plate in the kitchen and eat elsewhere to discourage second and third helpings. 4. Split meals when eating out. Take control of the amount of food that ends up on your plate by splitting an entree or placing half of your meal in a to-go box as soon as it arrives at the table. 5. Move it out of sight. You can’t eat what you don’t have, so replace the candy dish with a fruit bowl. Store cookies and chips on high shelves out of eyesight. 6. Go small. Larger packages cause us to eat more without noticing, so don’t eat from the package. Divide up large packages into small containers when you get home from the store. 7. Check food labels to understand the portion you should be eating. Rethink your drinks without giving up your favorites Many people don’t realize how many calories their coffees, sodas and juices contribute to their daily total. Check the nutrition information on your drinks and use these tips to reduce the numbers. At the coffee shop • Request that your drink be made with fat-free or skim milk instead of whole milk. • Order the smallest size available. • Forgo the extra ﬂavoring. Most ﬂavor syrups used in coffee shops, like vanilla or hazelnut, are sugar-sweetened and will add calories to your drink. • Get back to basics. Order a plain cup of coffee with fat-free milk and artiﬁcial sweetener, or drink it black. • Skip the whip. The whipped cream on top of coffee drinks adds calories and fat. 38B At the smoothie stand • Order a child’s size, if available. • Ask to see the nutrition information for each type of smoothie and pick the one with the fewest calories. • Hold the sugar. Many smoothies contain added sugar in addition to the sugar found naturally in fruit, juice or yogurt. Ask that your smoothie be prepared without added sugar. Anywhere, anytime • Choose water, diet or low-calorie beverages instead of sugar-sweetened beverages. • For a quick, easy and inexpensive thirst-quencher, carry a water bottle and reﬁll it throughout the day. • Don’t “stock the fridge” with sugar-sweetened beverages. Instead, keep bottles of cold water in the fridge. • Serve water with meals. • Make water more exciting by adding slices of lemon, lime, cucumber or watermelon, or drink sparkling water. • Add a splash of 100-percent juice to plain sparkling water for a refreshing, low-calorie drink. • When you do opt for a sugar-sweetened beverage, go for the small size.
