Marietta-based Cobb EMC held its seventh annual Steak Out law enforcement appreciation lunch in June. The electric cooperative honored more than 200 local law enforcement and government ofﬁcials in communities within Cobb EMC’s service district. Invited departments were asked to bring their top-performing ofﬁcer or deputy to honor his or her service. Steak Out is one of Cobb EMC’s community outreach commitments to honor deserving organizations and individuals in the cooperative’s service district. Cobb EMC Board Chairman Ed Crowell thanked the crowd for their dedicated service. “Our communities are not only safer, but better because of what you do,” he said. Bobby Ferris, left, director of marketing/energy services at Southern Rivers Energy in Barnesville, awarded Ray Horton, of Concord, with a new laptop computer at the electric cooperative’s ofﬁce last December. Horton, a freshman at Pike County High School in Zebulon, was the winner of GEORGIA Magazine’s 2012 statewide laptop contest. The annual contest encourages students to ﬁll out and send in the reader inquiry coupon included in the magazine’s September Higher Education Guide. More online at www.georgiamagazine.org Every year, electric membership cooperative (EMC) employees from across the state participate in the Management Development Program offered through the University of Georgia’s Carl Vinson Institute of Government. The classes are held at the Georgia EMC Training, Education and Safety facility in Smarr. As part of the course, the class is required to have a Service Learning Project. The 2013 class opted to partner with Mt. Zion United Methodist Church in Smarr to improve the community’s recreational park area. The class repaired an existing picnic table, purchased a new picnic table and three seating benches and placed trash receptacles throughout the park area. A landscaped picnic area was developed for park visitors to enjoy. The 2013 class includes George McLendon and Tammye Vaughn, Altamaha EMC; James McPherson and Daniel Smith, Carroll EMC; Dustin McNeely, Coweta-Fayette EMC; Jerry Drazny, Flint Energies; Gabriele Dyson, GreyStone Power; Harry Avery, Yvette Brock, Gary Hughes and Isiah Hurst, Jefferson Energy Cooperative; Mark Crenshaw, Adam Harbaugh, Jeff Holbrook, Brandy Nichols and Gary Poss, Sawnee EMC; Jamie Nash and Amaris Rahseed, Snapping Shoals EMC; Chris Biggers and Kevin Morris, Washington EMC; and Charles Williams, Georgia System Operations Corp.
