They are Agnes Scott College, Emory University, Georgia Institute of Technology, Morehouse College, Oglethorpe University and Spelman College in Atlanta; and the University of Georgia in Athens. One example is East Georgia State College (ESGC) in Swainsboro. Because the cost to attend EGSC is next to lowest among the USG institutions, attending EGSC is an economical way for students to start college, obtain an associate degree, then transfer or enter the job market. “Employers seek well-rounded people, and ESGC furthers that aim through our collaboration with Georgia Regents University (GRU),” says Jeff Edgens, director of EGSCAugusta. Edgens explains that EGSC prepares students for transfer and gives them the skills to thrive at GRU as they advance toward their careers. “They learn time management, selfdiscipline, multitasking, and written and oral critique. Writing and critical thinking are two key elements an employer wants to see.” EGSC offers a registered nursing program in collaboration with Darton State College in Albany. Students take the basic core courses through EGSC and apply for the Darton cohort (the group of students accepted into the Darton program). EGSC also offers a bachelor’s degree in business administration online through Georgia Southwestern State University in Americus. EGSU also has online degrees in psychology, sociology and general studies, and plans expansion of these options for students who cannot come to an actual classroom. Another option is eCore, the University System of Georgia’s electronic core curriculum, which offers students the opportunity to complete undergraduate, general educational requirements online through accredited colleges and universities. Each course is consistent in both design and accessibility standards and taught by professors hand-selected from USG institutions.
