(Contined from front shop ask her boyfriend if he would help her build a stud wall at a Habitat for Humanity construction site the next weekend. He looked at her quizzically and asked, "Studs are nails, right?" I didn't know whether to laugh or cry. They must not teach shop anymore. That would be a shame because I think shop has the potential to teach students nearly all they need to know to be a success in life. It starts with the requirement that all students have some mastery of math, geometry and physics. A little environmental science wouldn't hurt either. Shop teaches students to plan ahead (measure twice, cut once), compromise when necessary (make it smaller if you can't afford larger), conserve resources (you may need them for the next project) and, above all, learn the meaning of common sense. Don't touch anything that is already smoking (it may leave a scar), or anything that spins at 3,000 rpms (fingers are always needed for other projects). And you're not finished until you put away your tools, clean up and are ready for a future project. Actually, that's what the term "squared away" means in any profession. If schools don't teach shop anymore, how is our country going to survive? Where is Mr. Thomas when we need him most? flap) Wrap .375 Spine .8125 Back fl ' What readers asked It's My View A great gift idea! When I was an eighth-grader, shop was required for all the boys; the girls took something called home ec. I never learned what they were doing in there. On the first day of class, our instructor, Mr. Thomas, cautioned the boys to pay close attention to everything he said or they would end up like him. He walked over to the radial arm saw and, with a dramatic wave of his left hand, held it up to show that his index finger ended at the first joint. The class gasped, then erupted into laughter when he proceeded to unfold his finger to show that all of it was still there. From that day forward, he had me hooked. And he taught us a lot. As a result, there is hardly anything around the house I can't make or fix. We boys did more than build simple coatracks and bookends. Most graduated from those simple projects in the first few weeks, and by Christmas, we were into real furniture. I chose to build a nightstand for my bedroom at home. The top would hold my radio and alarm clock. The middle shelf was tall enough for a dozen books placed on end. The bottom shelf was reserved for magazines, stacked flat. That little nightstand served me well through high school, college and even early married years. I finally gave it to my son, who used it for many more years before retiring it to the attic when the nightstand became unstable and resisted further repair. I thought about that eighthgrade project the other day when I overheard a young lady in a coffee It's My View ' W hen Paul Wood writes ab in his monthly "Viewpoi GEORGIA Magazine, h reflections are often laced with lessons he learned while grow town of Natchitoches , La.
