The bulldog statue outside of Memorial
Hall was patterned after Mike, a brindle
bulldog owned by C.L. Fain. The statue
was cast by Gene Owens of Fort Worth,
Texas, as his master's thesis.
The University of Georgia buries Ugas in
marble vaults at Sanford Stadium. Bronze
plaques serve as memorials to the late Ugas,
and flowers are laid on the graves before the
football team's home games.

Mr. Angel, who was owned by Eastman
physician Warren Coleman, served as the
UGA mascot from 1944 to 1946.

1951 to 1955. Along with serving as
the mascot, Mike made another important contribution to UGA history;
he is the model for
the bulldog statue
that sits outside Memorial Hall.

era of Georgia Bulldog mascots began.

Butch, a brindle English bulldog, served as the university's
mascot from 1947 to 1951. Butch
was owned by Warner Robins resident Mabry Smith, a business
owner who also bred English
bulldogs. According to the University
of Georgia, Butch accompanied Smith
to the 1946 Georgia-Georgia Tech
game, where he was spotted by students. Smith agreed to allow Butch to
serve as the UGA mascot.
Butch's tenure as the mascot was
cut short when the dog, running
loose, was shot by a Warner Robins
police officer. The city of Warner
Robins dedicated a marker in 2011 in
honor of Butch and Smith and their
contribution to University of Georgia
history.
Cliff Smith, Mabry Smith's son,
used to accompany his father and
Butch to UGA games.
"I used to get to run on the field
with them," Smith said at the time of
the marker dedication. "Dad would
hand the dog off to the cheerleaders,
When Uga VII passed away unexpectedly before the final home game
in 2009, the players wore special
decals on their helmets in his memory.
