A bumper crop of fall fun
Get lost in one of Georgia's corn mazes
L
ee Reeves peers out over acres of
corn on his family's farm in Jenkins
County and smiles. It looks like a
healthy crop.
Then he narrows his eyes and
tightens his grip on the handles of
his lawn mower. He gives it the gas
and proceeds to mow down row after row, shearing green stalks down
to the field's sandy loam soil.
He'll keep this up for hours, littering his path with plants that would
have produced bushels of corn.
But Reeves, a member of the
Planters Electric Membership Corp.
board of directors, isn't out to harvest
grain from this 8-acre plot. He and
his family are looking to produce fun
for nearly 10,000 visitors who will
find their way through the intricate
design he's cutting into his corn field,
better known as Hootie's Corn Maze.
Hootie's is one of dozens of corn
mazes in Georgia this fall, offering
folks a fun way to experience a bit
of farm life. They generally open in
late September and welcome visitors
through Thanksgiving.
Since the first such maze tasseled out in Georgia at Cagle's Dairy
in Canton nearly two decades ago,
the concept has taken hold, says
Beth Oleson, executive director of
the Georgia Agritourism Association.
Oleson says there are 30 to 40 mazes
statewide each year, and each typically welcomes thousands of visitors.
Aerial photos show off clever
illustrations carved into the densely
planted corn fields. Sponsor promos, military tributes, FFA and 4-H
logos, celebrity faces and even the
likeness of an actor/professional wrestler have been among the
mazes.

Method to the maze
The processes for creating these
mazes are almost as varied as the
designs themselves. Most begin with
planting and then cross-planting corn
to achieve a thicker stand. A major-
