Historic Oakland Cemetery is a treasure in
the heart of Atlanta

Atlanta Cemetery
was established in 1850
as the town was rapidly
growing. The previous
graveyard, a small plot
on Peachtree Street
near modern-day Baker
Street, was an obstacle
to the city's development. After a lengthy
search for a suitable

Nestled in the shadow of
Atlanta's towering skyline is a landscape of a different kind, filled with
green fields, gardens, stately shade
trees, meandering paths and monumental architecture. This is Historic
Oakland Cemetery, Atlanta's oldest
public burial ground. It's a must-see
destination for all who are seeking
to discover the many stories woven
into the city's colorful history.
Atlanta History Center historian
Donald Rooney noted that "within
the confines of those red-brick-andstone walls there's hardly a chapter
of our city's history that cannot be
told."
Today, Oakland remains an
active cemetery and has regained
prominence as a gathering place
for visitors from every walk of life.
Yearly, more than 40,000 visitors
from across the country and the
globe travel to Oakland to see the
monumental architecture, stroll the
Wooding. While the city owned
the land and two "public
grounds" for interment of paupers and travelers, burial plots
also were sold to individuals
and families, an arrangement
that created maintenance and
management challenges that
would last more than a century.
Over the next two decades,
dramatic population growth,
the Civil War and the horrific
toll of illnesses and communicable diseases, especially
among children, required multiple expansions of the burial
ground. It reached its current size, 48.5 acres, with the
purchase of land from Lemuel
P. Grant (for whom Grant Park
is named) in 1867. Development surrounding the cemetery
made further expansions impossible, leading to the establishment of Westview (primarily
for white burials), South-View
(for black burials) and Greenwood (consecrated grounds for
Jewish burials) cemeteries in
Atlanta in 1884, 1886 and 1904,
respectively.
