Sea turtles rule at annual beach run
TYBEE ISLAND MARINE SCIENCE CENTER
ull out your running shoes and do a good deed on April 29, when the Tybee
Island Marine Science Center hosts its 13th annual Turtle Trot on the beach at
Tybee Island. The race starts and finishes at the Tybee Pier and Pavilion and draws
500 to 700 runners.
The Turtle Trot takes place at low tide. Registration begins at 7 a.m. for the
7:30 a.m. race. Proceeds help fund the monitoring and protection of sea turtles during nesting and hatching season. The Turtle Trot also supports the center's educational programs.
"At the end of the race, we
always release some of the sea
turtle patients who have been
rescued and cared for at the
Georgia Sea Turtle Center on Jekyll Island," says Maria Procopio,
executive director of the Tybee
Island Marine Science Center.
"We're all part of the Georgia
Department of Natural Resources
Georgia Sea Turtle Cooperative."
