Another option for kids is The
First Tee, a national, nonprofit youthdevelopment organization. In 1997,
the LPGA, the Masters Tournament,
the PGA of America, the PGA Tour
and the USGA partnered to form The
First Tee as a way to bring affordable
junior-golf programs to communities
that did not have them, especially in
economically disadvantaged areas.
Today, the organization includes
The First Tee National School Program, which brings golf to elementary gym classes, and The First Tee
DRIVE, an after-school program for
youngsters participating in organizations like the YMCA and the Boys &
Girls Clubs. There are 438 The First
Tee National School Programs and 21
The First Tee DRIVE after-school programs in Georgia.
The First Tee offers group lessons to children ages 7 to 18. Special golf attire is not required, and
chapters provide access to golf clubs
and balls. Chapters also offer scholarships or reduced-fee programming
for those with financial need. Chapters in Georgia are based in Albany,
