pringtime brings so many colorful blooms to enjoy it's easy to get
overwhelmed by the plethora of
choices. Here are some favorites, for
both sun and shade, that are sure to
bring a rainbow of color to garden
beds and containers.
Angelonia: This upright beauty
produces tall spikes of purple, pink
or white flowers all summer long.
This very hardy, water-wise annual
attracts pollinators and should be
planted in full to partial sun.
Marigold: The golden-yellow
and orange hues of cheerful marigolds grace the garden spring through
fall. These annuals repel insects and

deer, making them great companion plants for tomatoes and
other plants that critters find tasty.
Plant in full sun.
Vinca: Vinca blooms come in
pink, purple, red, white, magenta and
bicolors, and the blooms last spring
through fall. Plant this heat-tolerant,
water-wise and deer-resistant annual
in full sun.
Begonia: This low-maintenance,
deer-resistant annual produces rich
red or vivid pink blooms in spring
and summer. Several varieties provide
different bloom colors, foliage colors
and sizes. Begonias prefer consistent
moisture. Plant them in full shade to
partial sun.
Caladium: Grown for their colorful, uniquely shaped foliage, deerresistant caladiums add a fun tropical
look to any shady spot. Foliage colors and patterns vary greatly, offering
lots of options, such as white, pink
and red. Caladiums prefer consistent
moisture. They love heat but not direct sun, so plant them in full shade
to partial sun.
