If your mental picture of seniorcitizen athletics involves shuffleboard
and horseshoes, you're only partly
right. Yes, Georgia's annual Golden
Olympics-qualifier for the National
Senior Games-does include these
stereotypical "geezer" sports, but it
also encompasses more traditional
Olympic events like triathlon, basketball and cycling.
So if you think senior citizens are
more interested in rocking chairs than
competitive sports, see "Going for
gold in their golden years" on page
16. These athletes are proving that, as
baseball legend Yogi Berra famously
said, "it ain't over till it's over!"
Next, we visit a religious tradition
that has roots in Georgia going back
to the early 1800s. Camp meetings are
a predominantly Methodist practice
involving days-long gatherings of the
faithful at an outdoor site for group
worship. According to the New Georgia Encyclopedia, the first recorded
camp meeting in Georgia was held
in 1803 on Shoulderbone Creek in
Hancock County.
These early camp-meeting sites
were little more than brush arbors
surrounded by horse-drawn wagons.
In the years since, the amenities of
camp meetings have changed, but the
purpose hasn't. Turn to "Faith, fellowship and family" on page 22 to find
out how, for many "tenters," camp
meeting is a constant in an everchanging world.
Finally, we take a look at another tradition: that of communities
celebrating their heritage with a commemorative cookbook. See page 34
to learn how LaGrange-based Diverse
Power's "Place and Plate" cookbook
showcases not only the area's best
recipes but also the history, attractions and events of the co-op's West
Georgia territory.

Thanks for the lead
I love and look forward to your
magazine every month. It is very informative and interesting. You do a
great service to the people of Georgia

What prompted me to write to

Great response
Thank you for the article on the
100th anniversary of the Farmers &
Consumers Market Bulletin that was
published in your March 2017 issue.
We've picked up nearly 600 new subscribers since the article.
We're getting lots of positive
comments, and people are referencing the article specifically when they
call. Some have told us that they remember their parents or grandparents receiving the Bulletin, but, until
they saw the article, they didn't realMore online at www.georgiamagazine.org
