It still thrills her to hear parents

again. You've restored his confidence and self-esteem. He knows
he's not alone."
Camp Sunshine is celebrating
its 35th birthday, and Jordan is still
going to camp. But growing demand
meant that existing Georgia campsites couldn't accommodate all the
special-needs camps, and some had
nowhere to go.
"Our board member Doug
Hertz [CEO, United Distributors] was
the visionary behind the building
and funding of Camp Twin Lakes,
a camp that could serve multiple
organizations," Jordan says. GeorgiaPacific donated the first 115 acres,
and in 1993 Camp Twin Lakes was
off and running.
Camp Twin Lakes added Camp
Will-A-Way, a 54-acre site within
Fort Yargo State Park, in 2009. "It
was built in the 1970s for kids with
disabilities. We made a $10 million
restoration and thought it would
take four to five years to grow into
it. By the second season, all slots
were full," COO Mathews says.
In 2011, it added a third property, Camp Dream, which it runs
in collaboration with the Roosevelt
Warm Springs Institute for Rehabilitation in Warm Springs.
"What amazes me is how universal the camp experience is for
everyone and how beneficial it is for
campers to be surrounded by other
kids and adults who get it," Mathews
says. "All our activities are purposeful and aim to support friendshipbuilding skills, responsibility and
independence."
