hese days, a growing number
of Georgians are giving up their
traditional homes to live in tiny
houses. Many call it "living small,"
and, for some, it's the ideal lifestyle.
"The whole thing is about getting back to less space, more life,"
says Will Johnston of Tiny House Atlanta, tinyhouseatlanta.com, a Georgia nonprofit dedicated to promoting
education about and advocacy for
the tiny-house movement.
The tiny-house movement is a
social phenomenon that espouses
simple living in small homes. The average American home is 2,600 square
feet, while the average tiny house
is between 100 and 400 square feet.
Most tiny-house owners agree that
the main benefits of living small are
financial freedom, a simpler lifestyle
and a minimal environmental footprint.
"For us, the advantages are a
simpler life. We don't have all the
stuff anymore," says Denise Ryals,
who lives in a 250-square-foot house
in Danville with her husband, Tom.
But no matter how small the
space, there's always room for pets.
Denise and Tom share their tiny
home with three cats and three dogs.
"Everybody finds their spot,"
she says.
Seven cats and a dog have their
own spots, too, in John and Fin
Kernohan's 304-square-foot house
in Putnam County. There's plenty of
room for everyone.
"We're out in our own wooded

area far away from everybody and
everything," says John, who is chairman of the United Tiny House Association. The organization donates
all proceeds from its Tiny House Festivals to the local communities and
charities where the events are held.

The couple also owns a second,
148-square-foot, traveling tiny house.
"We really enjoy being around
each other," John says. "One of the
things that supports our unity with
each other is living in a tiny home.
We also like zero debt. We own our
land. We own both of our houses.
We own our car. We have zero balance on the two credit cards that we
have. We like the fact that our financial footprint is very small in regard
to debt. We have a philosophy: If
we can't pay for it with cash or use
the debit card from our checking
account, is it really worth buying
at all?"
Sharing close quarters and financial freedom are just part of the tinyhouse lifestyle for the Kernohans.
"We're very big on having a
very small carbon footprint. Our
304-square-foot house is an off-grid
home. It works on solar. It doesn't
impede on the environment in any
way," John says. "Even our [traveling]
tiny house has a full solar system.
Both houses have these very highend composting-toilet systems where
we aren't flushing things into the
