Room to grow
While contemplating location, you need to decide if
you want fish. This will help to answer the question of
how big to make your pond. If you want only plants, it
really doesn't need to be any deeper than 18 to 24 inches
and the total volume does not matter. To have fish, you
need deeper water and significantly more space.
A good rule of thumb for goldfish is 50 gallons per
fish and an area at least 2.5 feet deep. Because koi grow
larger and have a different diet, you need at least 300 gallons of water per fish and a depth of more than 3 feet.
Larger pond volumes make maintaining water quality
easier, and deeper water also stays cool in the summer
and warm enough in the winter-insurance against Georgia's wide swing of temperatures.
Like a natural pond, you need a variety of water
depths. Marginal or "bog" plants, such as irises, need shallow water less than 6 inches deep, so design in some
"shelves" for these types of potted plants to sit on. Other
common and easy-to-grow plants, like pickerel rush or
arrowhead plants, can thrive in a foot of water once established. And some waterlilies, the crown jewels of the
garden pond, need at least a couple feet of depth. They
may spread 6 to 8 feet horizontally, so make sure your
vision for the types of plants you want matches the space
you have in mind.
