in case of a disaster. September is
National Preparedness Month, a
month dedicated to educating people about how to prevent, protect
against, mitigate, respond to and
recover from threats and hazards.
These include natural disasters, disease pandemics and man-made hazards, such as chemical spills, terrorist
attacks and cyberattacks.
Here are some tips for being
better-prepared for emergency situations.
Examine your life. It is difficult
to educate yourself on every possible
disaster that may occur. However,
you can prepare for disasters that are
more likely to happen to you. Think
about where you live, the places you
go and the people in your life. Ask
yourself questions, and make a plan.
Here are some questions to consider:
* Do tornadoes occur in your region?
Pick a place to take shelter.
* Do hurricanes occur in your region? Know the local hurricaneevacuation route and make a plan
for where you can stay.
* Do you work in a multistory building? Know the fire evacuation plan.
* Do you have kids? Make a plan
with them about what to do in case
they ever get lost.
Make a kit. It is wise to prepare
different types of kits for multiple
emergency situations. Common kits
to make are:
* a first-aid kit with latex gloves,
adhesive bandages and cleansing
agents;
* a storm kit with warm blankets,
nonperishable food and a fire extinguisher; and
* a car supply kit with jumper cables,
a car charger for your cell phone
and an ice scraper.
Stay connected. Download
the Federal Emergency Management
Agency (FEMA) mobile app or Ready
Georgia mobile app, and purchase a
National Oceanic and Atmospheric
Administration weather radio. These
provide weather alerts, disaster re-

about national preparedness. Follow
