The value of Georgia's small
businesses is sometimes underestimated. But the truth is, there is
nothing small about their role in our
economy. According to the University of Georgia's Small Business Development Center in Athens, more
than 980,000 small businesses are in
Georgia, and together they account
for almost 98 percent of all employers. Not exactly small potatoes!
Every November we celebrate
our state's entrepreneurial spirit
with a salute to Georgia's small
businesses and their products. See
"Created in Georgia" on page 16 to
learn how savvy entrepreneurs have
filled a need in the marketplace by
providing unique products and gifts.
Speaking of gifts, November
also kicks off the holiday season,
and what better way to get into the
spirit than by visiting some of the
many seasonal arts and crafts fairs
around the state? Besides providing
a festive family outing, these fairs
also support local communities and
artisans, so turn to "Home(made)
for the holidays" on page 32 to find
out how you can skip the long lines
at the mall this year while stocking
up on one-of-a-kind gifts.
Last but not least, November
brings Veterans Day, and in this
issue we focus on an organization that provides vital assistance
to veterans transitioning to civilian
life: the Georgia Veterans Education
Career Transition Resource (VECTR)
Center in Warner Robins. The transition from uniformed duty to civilian
status is not just a change of jobs;
it's a change in virtually every aspect of a veteran's life. See "A new
assignment" on page 28 to learn
how the center is helping to make
this transition easier for those who
have served their country in the
armed forces.
