Giant pumpkin tips scales, earns state record

Albany Museum
reopens after tornado

C

losed for more than eight months
after a Jan. 2 tornado took the
roof off the building last year, the
Albany Museum of Art celebrated its
grand reopening at the end of the
summer.
The interior of the first floor was
rebuilt, creating exhibit galleries and
offices.
"Thanks to several community
organizations, we were able to continue to offer our programming in
their spaces," says Paula Williams,
executive director of the museum.
"We're especially grateful to Thronateeska Heritage Center, the Flint
RiverQuarium and their executive
director, Tommy Gregors, for all the
support and help to get us through
this."
The museum has resumed its
regular exhibits and programming. A
major exhibit, From Heart to Hand:
African-American Quilts From the
Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts,
continues through Feb. 24.
"The community really got behind us," Williams says. "It's clear that
the museum is a vital part of the fabric of Albany and our area, and we're
glad to be open again."

im Grizzle and Patrick Fix of
Blairsville harvested the current
Georgia state-record pumpkin,
which weighed a whopping 1,306
pounds. Grizzle and Fix hauled their
prize pumpkin to a Great Pumpkin
Commonwealth-sanctioned site in
Allardt, Tenn., to have it weighed in
officially.
Grizzle says he has enjoyed
watching children crawl all over the
great pumpkin.
"Seeing the joy brought to the
faces of visitors to the farmers market
where the pumpkin has been on display was extraordinary," says Mickey

all times of the day posing for photographs with the pumpkin. In fact,
one morning while [I was] at the canning plant, someone drove up at 5:30
